First, we will focus on the development of specific pre-Contact Native American societies, including the Mayan, Aztec, Incan, Anasazi, Cahokian, and broader peoples of the Eastern Woodlands Culture. This will involve a close reading of pages 6 to 12 from Created Equal as well as an examination of William Cronon's essay, "Seasons of Want and Plenty."
Second, we will turn to Europe and look at the world of Christopher Columbus. The life of Columbus is shrouded in myth, mystery, and misinformation. Hailed by some as a visionary genius and grand mariner, he is reviled by others as a greedy entrepreneur and ruthless imperialist. This week, we will examine of the life and times of Columbus in an effort to get beyond the hype. What did he think about the world around him? What did he hope to do in 1492? And why were his voyages so significant? [You may find this modern take on Contact interesting - video ]
