Week 4

*Introduction | September 17 to September 23

By the time the English established their tiny colonial outpost at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, the Spanish Empire stretched over 8,000 miles from the southern tip of South America to the northern portions of California. Why, when the Spanish were so obviously gaining wealth and power from their new holdings, did the English take so long to start their own colonial system? To answer this question, we must examine multiple issues, including diplomacy, economics, and most of all religion. We will spend the first part of week four examining the Spanish Empire and its impact in the Americas. Then, in the second part of the week, we will explore the causes of the "English delay" and its consequences for later exploratory efforts by the English at the end of the sixteenth century.
