dCOURSE DESCRIPTION

 

In this course, students will use the Hawaiian Island of Oahu as a laboratory to examine the interaction of global cultures in American history. Working in co-ordination with professors from the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies at the University of Hawaii, class members will visit and interpret key sites, including Waimea Falls, the 'Iolani Palace, the Valley of the Temples, the Mission House Museum, the USS Arizona Memorial, and the Polynesian Cultural Center.


dCOURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1) Students will gain factual knowledge through the study of:
a) interdisciplinary scholarship on the rise and spread of human culture;
b) current research on the impact of European and American imperialism;
c) the resilience of native cultures facing ecological and cultural imperialism;
d) the effort to sustain a pluralistic, democratic society in modern Hawaii.

2) Students will learn fundamental principles, generalizations, and theories.
Students will examine the fundamental principles of historical scholarship as they evaluate traditional and recent interpretations of the American past.

3) Students will analyze and evaluate ideas, arguments, and points of view.
Students will strengthen their capacity for critical examination as they analyze historical developments in Hawaii. In so doing, every student will fulfill assignments that require the use of written and spoken language to recognize, evaluate, and construct arguments on complex and interdisciplinary subjects.

- Make a photostory on one of the sites we visit
- Use pictures, music, and voice-overs
- The course webpage will link to your photostory

3) Write a 10-15 page RESEARCH PAPER on a course topic
33 percent of grade

- Write your paper when we return from the trip
- You must use primary and secondary sources
- You must discuss one of the topics covered in class
- The course webpage will link to your paper

dSIGNING UP FOR THE TRIP

 


• The Travel Fee for this course is $1,995.00.

• The Travel Fee Covers: Round-trip Airfare to/from Houston, Lodging (dbl. room), Class related travel, Polynesian Culture Center and Luau, all field site entry fees, visiting lectures by faculty from University of Hawaii and the East-West Center.

• To sign up, complete the following steps.

1) Fill out a student information sheet and submit it to Dr. Littlejohn

2) Submit a $250.00 non-refundable deposit to Dr. Littlejohn by Oct. 15, 2006.

3) Pay the remainder of the travel fee -- $1745.00 -- to Dr. Littlejohn by November 1, 2006.

4) During Pre-registration for Spring 2007, sign up for HIS 475.
